Accelerate Orthodontic Treatment Times with AcceleDent

Today’s orthodontic treatment options are vastly different than 15 years ago. Where traditional metal braces was the only method to straighten someone’s teeth, now there are more options available to patients which are more discreet and comfortable. One of these techniques is called Invisalign where a series of clear, removable aligners are used to shift teeth into the desired position. Orthodontists’ also offer lingual braces which are similar to traditional braces but they’re fixed to the back of patients’ teeth. Say goodbye to hiding your smile with orthodontic treatment!

Not only have the methods of straightening teeth changed, but treatment times are also significantly reduced thanks to a small device called ‘AcceleDent’. To give you some insight, today we’ll be exploring AcceleDent in greater detail.

What is AcceleDent?

AcceleDent is only a relatively new technology which was released into the American market in 2012. AcceleDent is a small, handheld device which uses cyclic forces and soft pulse technology to speed up the tooth movement process by between 30% and 50%. The device is used in conjunction with both Invisalign and Braces patients to reduce treatment times considerably. Used for just 20 minutes each day, AcceleDent is an exciting technology that also offers patients a way to reduce any discomfort in a non-invasive way.

How does AcceleDent work?

Orthodontists’ are able to move patients’ teeth by utilising the ‘bone remodelling’ process, whereby the pressure applied to teeth initiates a cellular response as bone cells assemble around the roots of each tooth. As a result, the bone surrounding the teeth change which allows teeth to be shifted into the desired position.

AcceleDent contains a small, portable mouthpiece which delivers gentle, painless vibrations to the roots of teeth and jawbone by switching an activator. These vibrations not only soothe any pain and discomfort, but they accelerate the bone remodelling process and allows orthodontists to shift patients’ teeth in a safer, faster, and more effective way. Because of the outstanding results, most Invisalign and Braces patients’ use AcceleDent technology without requiring any additional consultations with their orthodontist.

How is AcceleDent used?

AcceleDent is very simple and easy to use, just follow the instructions given to you by your orthodontist:

  1. Attach the mouthpiece to the activator and switch on
  2. Position the mouthpiece comfortably in your mouth
  3. Bite down on the mouthpiece firmly to ensure it stays in position
  4. For maximum effectiveness, ensure there is contact on all sides of the mouthpiece

Once your teeth are firmly within the mouthpiece, you don’t need to hold the device with your hands and you can even undertake some light household chores such as reading or watching television. You’ll need to allocate a full 20 minutes for the cycle – the device can be paused but only for up to 5 minutes at a time. If you foresee any extended disruptions then its best to postpone your cycle to a later time. For the best results, use the device around the same time each day and don’t forget to wash it with water when you’re finished and recharge the batteries!

Is AcceleDent safe?

Yes, AcceleDent has been cleared by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) as a Class II medical device which has offers no negative health effects or tooth damage. The device is a safe and non-invasive way of reducing treatment times for a number of orthodontic treatment options. The gentle vibrations not only reduce treatment times, but research has indicated that the device reduces pain and sensitivity that can be caused by orthodontic treatment.

The only drawback to using the AcceleDent device to speed up tooth movement is that not all orthodontic clinics offer this technology. Gold Coast Orthodontics offers all Invisalign and Braces patients’ the chance to use AcceleDent, so if you’re interested in orthodontic treatment, give our team a call on 07 5689 1224 to schedule a free initial consultation.
